Circumstances of Death

On December 9, 1929, Prohibition Agents Robert Freeman and Henry Jones were executing a search warrant on the residence of John South, in Yountville, CA.  While the search was ongoing, South attempted to dump a quantity of liquor into the sink.  During a struggle with the agents, he drew a .25 caliber pistol and shot and seriously wounded Agent Freeman.  Agent Freeman was rushed to the local hospital, and later died from his injury in February 1930.  John South was charged under State law with the murder of Agent Freeman.  He and his wife were also charged with various violations of the Federal liquor laws.

Agent Freeman became a Prohibition Agent on April 11, 1927, with an annual salary of $1,860.

Agent Freeman was born in Longdale, KY.  He was survived by his wife and son.
