Circumstances of Death

Prohibition Agents Cary Dorsey Freeman and Howard Fisher were executing a search warrant at the home of James Chambers in Norfolk (Titustown), VA.  While the officers were searching the house, Chambers retrieved a hidden gun and killed both agents.  Chambers fled, but was later hunted down and killed by a Federal posse.

Background

Agent Freeman joined the Prohibition Unit on June 26, 1922, with an annual salary of $1,500.  He had been on the job for only 27 days prior to his death.

Agent Freeman was born in Dinwiddie County, VA.  He was survived by his wife, Hazel (née Owen).
