ATF’s National Integrated Ballistic Information Network (NIBIN) National Correlation and Training Center (NNCTC) conducts ballistics image correlations and returns investigative leads to more than 1,400 law enforcement agencies across the nation. This accounts for roughly 30% of all ballistic image acquisitions in the United States.
By working closely with individual NIBIN partner sites, NNCTC enables them to concentrate their limited resources on other critical aspects of the NIBIN process. These leads are used to help solve homicides, attempted homicides, robberies and other shooting incidents.
As of August 2021, NNCTC has conducted 590,449 correlation reviews resulting in more than 159,347 leads sent to partner sites all over the country, with a 99.6% confirmation rate of the leads. Since the training center's opening in April 2016, 1,399 state and local law enforcement employees have received specialized NIBIN training.
To support the growing need for ballistics data, ATF’s current fiscal year appropriation funding will allow NNCTC to increase its capacity to 165 highly trained Correlation Review Specialists. As a result, an additional 400 local, state and federal personnel will receive training on NIBIN equipment and processes.
