Baton Rouge Man Pleads Guilty to Federal Gun Control Act Offense
NEW ORLEANS – U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans announced that on August 29, Carlsel Alexander, 28, a resident of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, pleaded guilty to a one-count indictment, charging him with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Sections 922(g)(1) and 924(a)(8).
Alexander faces a maximum term of imprisonment of up to 15 years, a fine of up to $250,000, a period of supervised release up to 3 years and a mandatory special assessment fee of $100.
According to court records, on February 21, New Orleans Police Department arrested Alexander for being in possession of a stolen FN Model 509, nine-millimeter firearm on a Mardi Gras parade route. Alexander is a convicted felon and is prohibited from possessing a firearm.
The Honorable Susie Morgan, U.S. District Court judge, will sentence Alexander on November 30.
This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program bringing together all levels of law enforcement and the communities they serve to reduce violent crime and gun violence, and to make our neighborhoods safer for everyone. On May 26, 2021, the Department launched a violent crime reduction strategy strengthening PSN based on these core principles: fostering trust and legitimacy in our communities, supporting community-based organizations that help prevent violence from occurring in the first place, setting focused and strategic enforcement priorities and measuring the results.
The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the New Orleans Police Department. It is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Troy Bell of the General Crime Unit.
